FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ

What are SolaSpecs?

SolaSpecs are non-prescription sunglasses with a built-in reading segment. The upper area is tinted for normal distance viewing, while a clear magnified segment at the bottom helps with close-up reading and detail work.

How do SolaSpecs work?

Look straight ahead through the tinted portion for distance viewing. When you need magnification, simply lower your gaze into the clear reading segment at the bottom of the lens.

Are SolaSpecs prescription sunglasses?

No. SolaSpecs are non-prescription reading sunglasses. They are intended for people who do not need prescription correction for distance but use reading magnification for close-up tasks.

Are SolaSpecs bifocal sunglasses?

They work similarly to non-prescription bifocal reading sunglasses because they provide two viewing areas within one lens: a non-magnified area for distance and a magnified area for near vision.

SolaSpecs feature a tinted distance-viewing area with a clear reading segment below.

Who are SolaSpecs designed for?

They're ideal for adults who see clearly at a distance but use reading glasses for small print and close-up tasks, especially people who spend time driving, commuting, fishing, boating, gardening, traveling or working on DIY projects.

What reading strengths are available?

SolaSpecs are available in +1.25, +1.50, +1.75, +2.00, +2.25, +2.50, +2.75 and +3.00 magnification.

How do I choose my magnification?

If you already use over-the-counter reading glasses, start with the strength you normally wear. If you're uncertain about your vision needs or haven't had a recent eye exam, speak with an eye-care professional.

Can I use SolaSpecs for driving?

SolaSpecs do not provide prescription distance correction. They should only be used for driving if your uncorrected distance vision meets applicable driving requirements and you are comfortable using segmented reading lenses.

If you need prescription eyewear to drive, SolaSpecs are not a substitute for it.

Can I wear SolaSpecs while fishing or boating?

Their combination of distance viewing and close-up magnification makes them especially convenient for activities where you're frequently switching between looking ahead and working with small details such as tackle, knots, equipment or gauges.

Are SolaSpecs good for gardening and DIY projects?

Yes. These are exactly the types of situations SolaSpecs were designed around. You can look across your workspace through the upper lens and use the reading segment for measurements, labels, instructions and other close-up details.

Will SolaSpecs take time to get used to?

Possibly. If you're new to segmented reading lenses, it may take a little time to become accustomed to lowering your eyes into the reading area. Start by wearing them during familiar, low-risk everyday activities until the movement feels natural.

Do SolaSpecs replace my regular reading glasses?

They can reduce the need to switch between sunglasses and readers while you're outside, but you may still prefer traditional reading glasses for extended indoor reading or other situations where sun lenses aren't needed.
